For my third instrument, I decided to experiment with several unusual design features. Fanned frets, seven strings, a florentine cutaway and an experimental back bracing pattern all feature on this unique instrument.

This semi- hollow jazz inspired instrument has a standard p90 pickup in the neck which can be combined with piezo pickups in the bridge for an interesting range of available tones.

Having owned a baritone electric guitar, I fell in love with its deep and distinctive voice and was interested in experimenting with this concept in acoustic form. Pat Metheny’s “One Quiet Night” album provided the final inspiration.

My first ever stringed instrument, this navy-style mandolin was a great starting point for learning the basics of luthiery. It’s like a guitar, only half as complicated! It was given to a friend as a gift.
